The Tassy Walden Awards for New Voices in Children’s Literature, sponsored by the CT Shoreline Arts Alliance, are a phenomenal opportunity for CT writers and illustrators of children’s and young adult literature. The great thing about the Tassys is that they provide unpublished artists and writers the chance to have their work seen and judged by industry professionals, agents and editors. My dear friend N.A. Nelson, a past Tassy winner in the Middle Grade Reader category for her novel, Bringing the Boy Home, encouraged me to submit THE NAMESAKE (then called JUNIOR) to the contest in 2010. I was a finalist, and after some revision, I submitted again in 2011. Second time was the charm; I won the 2011 Tassy Walden Award for Young Adult Manuscript! Another wonderful facet of the Tassys has to do with the people who make up the Tassy committee, an amazingly giving and enthusiastic bunch! It was an absolute thrill to read an excerpt of my novel at the awards ceremony in May, 2011. Thanks, CT Shoreline Arts Alliance, for helping emerging writers and artists keep the faith along the sometimes lonely journey toward publication.
